Glidemaster’s Maven upends Check Me Out in PASS
May 15th, 12
Maven 2,1:56f; 3,1:53.4f ($186,858) showed extreme promise as a 2-year-old, winning a quartet of stakes races last summer and beating the best in Lexington last fall in the Bluegrass Stakes. But the daughter of Glidemaster turned heads like never before as she defeated reigning champion Check Me Out in her first start of the season. [Watch Race]
She trotted the fastest mile by a 3-year-old filly in North America this year–and did it over a 5/8-mile track–winning her division of the $250,112 (div.) Pennsylvania Sire Stakes at The Meadows on May 15 in a sizzling 1:53.4. That winning time also eclipsed the stakes record and was just 3/5 of a second off the world mark.
Maven came first over to take the lead in the race just past the half, with Check Me Out sitting right behind her in the cover flow. She accelerated and never let up, trotting her last panel in :28.3 to keep the gifted Check Me Out safely at bay.
Maven, bred by All La Nuova Sbarra SRL, owned by Bill Donovan and trained by Jonas Czernyson, has now posted eight wins in 11 career starts, and looks like a serious contender for the upcoming summer distaff trotting classics.
Maven, along with another filly, Love Walked In 2,1:57.1f; 3,1:56.3f ($179,244), were the speed and money leaders in Glidemaster’s second crop. His first was led by 2-Year-Old Canadian Champion Blue Porsche 2,1:54.1; 3,1:54 ($609,548).
Glidemaster’s success at stud is something to take notice of, as he’s a sire who has proven to get world-class trotters from foal crops of limited size.
