Manchego gets her World Record

September 28, 2019

Manchego, the 2-year-old Dan Patch Champion and 3-year-old Hambletonian Oaks winner, has earned nearly every accolade in trotting except for one. And by winning last night’s $171,250 Dayton Trotting Derby in 1:50.1, she is now officially a “World Champion.” And no filly is perhaps more deserving of the title.

Blasting out from the six hole and leading throughout the race, she drew far away to score by an astonishing nine lengths for trainer Nancy Johansson and driver Dexter Dunn. (Watch replay—Sept. 27, race 9)

Hall of Fame trainer Jimmy Takter, who purchased her as a yearling for owner Barry Guariglia’s Black Horse Racing, posted on Twitter that it was one of the most impressive performances he has seen in his more than 40 years in the business.

Bred, raised and sold as a Lexington Selected yearling by Brittany Farms, Manchego went undefeated at 2 and won every major stakes race offered to her age, gender and gait. She was the richest 2YO trotter of 2017 ($873,948) and her freshman race mark of 1:52.4 also made her the fastest freshman filly trotter of that season. She easily won honors as “2-Year-Old Filly Trotter of the Year.”

She far surpassed a million dollars in earnings at 3, with her victories underscored by impressive tallies in both the elim and final of the $500,000 Hambletonian Oaks at the Meadowlands. Now as a 4-year-old, with her win in the Dayton Trotting Derby, she sports lifetime earnings of $1,813,230.
